The thing most people miss: the advertising lists six ingredients. The label on the bottle lists four things, and five of the six advertised ingredients are not among them.

The label, translated

What Is Actually in the Bottle

Here is the ingredient panel from the bottle, and underneath it, what each line means in ordinary words.

Supplement Facts

Serving Size: 1 capsule
Servings Per Container: 30
 Amount Per Serving
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) root Extract 4:175 mg
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) root Extract (95% curcuminoids)30 mg
Coleus Forskohlii Extract15 mg
Black Pepper (Piper nigrum) fruit Extract (BioPerine®)5 mg

Other ingredients: Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), Gelatin, Magnesium Stearate. Daily Value not established for any of the above. Transcribed from the product label supplied with this project.

Turmeric root extract 4:1 — 75 mg
"4:1" means four grams of dried turmeric root were boiled down to make one gram of this powder. It does not tell you how much of the useful compound ended up in there, which is the problem — nobody can work it out from the label.
Turmeric extract (95% curcuminoids) — 30 mg
This one is clear. 95% of these 30 mg is curcuminoids, the part of turmeric that has actually been studied. So about 28.5 mg. This is the only figure on the panel you can pin down.
Coleus Forskohlii extract — 15 mg
A plant extract. The label does not say how concentrated it is, so 15 mg could contain almost anything. It has been researched for eye pressure and asthma rather than joints.
Black pepper extract (BioPerine) — 5 mg
Helps your body absorb the turmeric. This is a normal, sensible amount and the best decision on the label.
Gelatin
What the capsule shell is made from. It comes from animals, so the product is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. The sales page never mentions this.

The number that matters

Is 35 mg of Curcumin a Lot?

The short answer

No. It is a small amount. The studies that made people interested in turmeric for joints generally gave participants between 500 mg and 1,500 mg of curcuminoids every day. One JointBrex capsule gives you roughly 35 mg.

That is somewhere between a tenth and a fortieth of the amount used in the research. It does not mean nothing happens. It does mean that if someone tells you turmeric was shown to help joints in a trial, that trial was testing a much larger amount than this.

The black pepper extract genuinely helps you absorb more of what is there — roughly twenty times more, according to the study everyone cites. But twenty times a small number is still a smallish number. Absorbing more of 35 mg is not the same as taking 500 mg.

The awkward bit

The Advertising and the Bottle Disagree

This is the part we would want a friend to tell us about before we spent $294.

Why we trust the bottle

The ingredient panel is a legal document with rules about what has to be on it. A sales page is advertising. When the two disagree, the panel is the one to believe — though honestly, the sensible thing is to check a real bottle before you spend anything.

Ask a pharmacist about these

  • Blood thinners — warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel. Turmeric affects clotting and so may forskolin.
  • Blood pressure tablets — forskolin lowers blood pressure too, and the effects add up.
  • Any other prescription — black pepper extract increases how much of a medicine your body absorbs, which effectively raises the dose.
  • Diabetes medicine — turmeric may lower blood sugar as well.
  • An operation coming up — stop turmeric supplements about two weeks beforehand and tell the surgical team.
  • Gallstones — turmeric makes the gallbladder work harder and is usually avoided.

A pharmacist will check your whole list in a few minutes and it costs nothing. It is the single most useful thing you can do before starting any supplement.

What is in the capsule

Three Things, Explained Simply

1

Turmeric & Curcuminoids

The main one

Turmeric is the yellow curry spice. The useful part is a group of compounds called curcuminoids. There is about 35 mg of them in each capsule — a small amount next to the 500 mg or more used in the studies people quote.

Explained in full →
2

Coleus Forskohlii

The odd one

A plant from the mint family. It has been studied for glaucoma and asthma, not for joints. The label says 15 mg of extract but does not say how strong the extract is, so nobody can work out what you are actually getting.

3

BioPerine® Black Pepper

The helper

A black pepper extract. Turmeric on its own is barely absorbed, and black pepper fixes that — it is the sensible part of this formula. It also increases how much of your other medicines you absorb, which is worth knowing.

What It Costs

Prices come from the manufacturer and the sale goes through BuyGoods. The sales page prints more than one price for the same quantity, so read the checkout total carefully before you pay.

Why the prices below carry a warning: the sales page has three price tables and they disagree. One bottle appears as $158 in two of them and $89 in the third. Three bottles appears as $207 and also $177. The six-bottle price of $294 is the only figure that is the same everywhere, and the only one we could confirm on the BuyGoods checkout screen.

The crossed-out prices are figures the manufacturer publishes. We found no evidence the product has ever sold at them, so please judge the price on the right and ignore the apparent discount. "See Price" opens our pricing page, which links to the official checkout. We may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Sixty Days — With One Catch

You can ask for your money back within 60 days of buying. The catch is in the wording: the published terms ask you to take the product for at least 30 days first. So in practice you have about a month to decide, not two.

The terms also do not say clearly whether the 60 days starts when you order or when it arrives, whether opened bottles count, or who pays to post it back. Ask before you buy, especially if you are ordering six bottles.

Questions

Common Questions, Answered Plainly

A turmeric capsule, taken once a day, sold online through BuyGoods and marketed for joint comfort.

Two turmeric extracts (75 mg and 30 mg), a Coleus Forskohlii extract (15 mg), and a black pepper extract called BioPerine (5 mg). That is 125 mg of active ingredients altogether, in a gelatin capsule.

We do not know, and we are not going to guess at motives. What we can say is that glucosamine, chondroitin, boswellia, MSM and bromelain all appear in the advertising and none of them appear on the bottle's ingredient panel.

It is a lot less than the studies used. Research suggesting turmeric helps joint symptoms generally used 500 mg to 1,500 mg of curcuminoids a day. This gives roughly 35 mg.

It helps a great deal with absorption — about twenty times more gets into your bloodstream. But it multiplies whatever is in the capsule. Twenty times a small dose is not the same as a large dose.

The bottle says one a day with a big glass of water. The website says two. Follow whatever is printed on the bottle you receive.

No. The capsule shell is gelatin, which comes from animals.

It might. Turmeric affects blood clotting, forskolin lowers blood pressure, and black pepper extract increases absorption of other medicines. Take the label to a pharmacist and ask — it is free and takes minutes.

No. No food supplement can legally claim to treat a disease, and there is no good evidence that anything taken by mouth rebuilds cartilage. The bottle's own wording is much more modest than the advertising.

Six bottles is $294 with free US postage — that is the one price we could confirm at the checkout. The smaller quantities appear at two different prices on the same sales page, so check the total before paying.
